We started offering Florence fingers foods at the start of Week 8. Before this, I was spoon feeding her both Breakfast and Lunch. A few days previous we started to give her little pieces of food that we were eating and she really, really took to it so we decided to start offering her Fingers Foods for lunch instead of a Purée. This means that Florence has gone from two meals a day to three meals a day, what a little piglet! Towards the end of the week we started giving Florence a couple of cubes of Fruit Purée for pudding after her Dinner.

Hiya, this is a great blog! I've been weaning for 2 months now and am still hesitant to offer finger food because of the choking aspect. How did florence get on with gumming the harder foods such as cucumber, breadsticks and tomatoes? Any tips?
ReplyDeleteThank you Gemma!
DeleteWith regards to finger foods, it can be scary but a baby has stronger gag reflexes than an adult. They have the ability to force food back up that's too big or going down the wrong way! Please remember that there is a difference between gagging and choking too, Florence has gagged on lumpy purees or finger food many a times but I pat her back and give her a little drink.
I put different finger foods on Florence's plate most days and she goes at her own pace. She used to play with the food rather than eat it, but now she's had lots of practice she's much better and ate a whole piece of toast for breakfast this morning!
Florence still doesn't have teeth but she is able to gum bits of food off. With Cucumber I cut the hard skin off at the moment. I used to do this with tomatoes too but I don't anymore. Breadsticks are a great finger food because they mush down really well!
Good luck xxx
